I am sure we have all been on trips and if you are someone who eats healthy you worry about what you will be able to eat.   I am a vegetarian, and when we go to visit our grandkids an hour and a half away, I pack things I can eat while we are there.

Here are so helpful ideas when traveling:

Eating Healthy With Oatmeal For Breakfast

  • Pack a few extra items, such as quick-cook oatmeal and mix with unsweetened dried fruit, cinnamon, and a sugar substitute Stevia, and divide into individual baggies for each day of your trip.  All you will need is hot water.
  • Bring a mini-blender with you, (if flying, pack the mini-blender in the checked baggage) protein power, get some bananas, and ice and you will have a tasty breakfast shake.
  • Pack chia seeds and flax meal to sprinkle over the oatmeal or in the breakfast shake for needed nutrients to help keep your immune system healthy while you travel.

  • You can also bring little bags of baby carrots you can buy or get the snack baggies and fill with the carrots. Use snack baggies and pack probably no more than about 15 almonds, per baggie for snacks.

  • If you are vegan you can also eat healthily, just check out restaurants nearby with vegan food and stores or markets that cater to vegan food mentioned below.  Pack items you can eat to bring along on the trip.
Look For Hotels With Kitchenettes

  • Before you start on your trip, plan ahead and Google the area of your hotel and you should be able to find travel blogs and a list of nearby restaurants and healthy grocery and food stores.
Many Hotels Have Free Breakfast

  • Many of the hotels have FREE breakfast or for a minimal charge, so get fruit, yogurt, and whole-grain toast or bagel.  Go light on the cream cheese, butter or jelly.  If you have a kitchenette, you can pick up healthy groceries to fix and have on hand.
  • Verify that your hotel room has a mini-refrigerator. That way, you can shop at a local store for healthy breakfast foods and snacks, such as whole-grain bread and nut butter and veggies and fruit to have on hand, as well as almond or soy milk to drink with your coffee.
You Look For Kitchenettes At Airbnbs Too

  •  If you find a place with a kitchenette, besides a hotel, you can pick up healthy groceries to fix and have on hand.  Not only can you shop healthy you can save money.  Check VRBO or Airbnb Vacation Rentals for options in your desired location.
You Can Eat Healthy At A Restaurant Too

  • When dining at a restaurant eat a salad with greens for higher nutrient content.   I am a vegetarian and I look for sides of fresh veggies or grains that I can add on to the salad. And when you can, opt for dressing on the side. Local soups can be filling, but avoid the cream-based versions, get ones with lower sodium content.  When you get home you can make homemade soups and control the amount of salt that goes in them.  You could also get a side of beans and a skinless chicken breast.
Always Have Bottled Water On Hand

Due to the Coronavirus, we are in unprecedented times, and traveling as we used to is changing to a new normal. Eventually, a vaccine and drugs for the symptoms will be available, so we can hopefully get back to where we are able to travel and not have to worry if our lives are in danger. In the meantime, stay safe and healthy and you can still eat healthily by ordering curbside.

You can deviate a little, but try to stick to a healthy diet throughout most of your trip. Remember to plan ahead and always have bottled water on hand or a safe water bottle you can refill. Amazon has a great assortment of water bottles to choose from.

  1. Yes, to this one except we bring a big pack of oatmeal with us for breakfast. We love almonds too. I learned a lot more on this article. Thanks for sharing ❤️?

  2. Thank you for the feedback April! This post came to me this last weekend when we went to visit our Grandkids, as I always have to be conscious of what will be available for me to eat, whether we are at someone’s home, at a restaurant, and or on vacation. More and more people are starting to have better eating habits, so I wanted to share this post with the options I discovered! There are choices out there!

    1. Thank you Lashunta! Congrats on being in your second month of eating healthier, and I hope some new ideas help keep you focused!
