Since we were young kids we always looked forward to going to the “Happiest Place On Earth”! Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, and was built in Anaheim, California, on 160 acres on what used to be orange groves.

It quickly grew a following and brought in a more than expected profit. Today, Disneyland has more than 14 million visitors a year, who spend close to $3 billion.

Walt Disney first worked out of a small studio in Los Angeles making animated cartoons, an in 1928, his short film Steamboat Willy, starred the character “Mickey Mouse”. This was the first animated film to use sound, and Disney provided the voice for Mickey.

From there the cartoons became very popular, but Disney was such a perfectionist when it came to artistic and technical quality, that the company suffered. In 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs became his first feature-length cartoon. Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi followed going through 1942.

Walt Disney began designing a huge amusement park to be built near Los Angeles, in the early 1950s, which ended up being Anaheim. Admission when it first opened for a one-day ticket cost $1 for adults and 50 cents for children. For each of the park’s 35 rides, 10-30 cents was charged on top of the one-day ticket cost.

A bigger Disney theme park and resort near Orlando, Florida was started in 1965, called Disney World. Walt Disney died in 1966, and Walt Disney World was opened in his honor on October 1, 1971.

Adult admission was $3.50 and $1 for children, but that cost didn’t include rides and attractions which ranged from 10-90 cents on a pay-as-you-go basis. Disneyland Tokyo opened in Japan in 1982, and in 1992 Disneyland Paris opened to a mixed reaction. The newest Disneyland, in Hong Kong, opened its doors in September 2005.

  1. Thank you Melissa, and thanks for sharing on your FB page! It has gotten so expensive to go to those places, especially families!

  2. Thank you for sharing. My family has recently started debating when we will take my 3 year old to the Happiest Place on Earth and I’m sure we’ll need all the savings we can find.

  3. I remember growing up 30 minutes from Disneyland and spending so much time there as a kid. It’s changed so much, but what hasn’t changed is the Disney magic. I try to get there once a year now even though my daughter is grown. Looking forward to the day we can take my grandkids there.

    1. Thank you for your feedback, Jen! Yes, It has changed, but the magic is still there. Even though I live in California, we have not been back in about 20 years. Hopefully, my niece can bring her kids and we can go then.

  4. Thank you for stopping by Chris! You don’t have to have kids, as going there makes you feel like a kid again. Like the saying, “Just do it”!

    1. I agree, Brenda, it makes you feel like a kid again! I have been to Disneyland many times, but have not made it to Disney World yet. That can be on my bucket list! Thanks for commenting.

  5. It is always nice to know ahead of time what deals are out there. You are always so informative on your posts on what people can save on their trips, so it makes it easier to plan and budget. Thanks for commenting, April!
