1963

I will be starting this post in 1963 when I was 11 years old and in the sixth grade living in Durango, Colorado, while my dad was stationed on Johnston Island for a year in the Pacific Ocean. He was in the Air Force. My sisters, Lori and Kim, were 2 years old and an infant.

My friends were starting to be a very important part of my life. In my opinion, the ’60s had the best music of any decade, and you still have music from that era in commercials and in movies.

The Chiffons, Herman’s Hermits (formed in England in 1963), Lesley Gore, Dionne Warwick, James Brown, The Rolling Stones, The Kingsmen, The Beach Boys, and Jan & Dean were some of the popular artists of that year.

1964

This year we were transferred to Merced, CA., where my parents bought a home. I was starting junior high school, (which is now called middle school), and had to make new friends.

The top 5 spots on the Billboard Year-End Chart were Beatle songs. 1. Can’t Buy Me Love 2. Twist And Shout 3. She Loves You 4. I Want To Hold Your Hand 5. Please, Please Me.

In Conclusion

The ’60s can be remembered as a time of war, and equal rights protests, in my opinion, one of the most diversified music genres, as you still hear music from this time in commercials, TV programs, and movies.

The Beatles were dominant and became a legacy, several important public and political figures were assassinated, the space program was strong, and a man walked on the moon, fashion was more colorful and bold than I can remember, and many new inventions and services were created.

There was so much that transpired during this decade, definitely a time of change!

I feel this was a good time to grow up, as we were taught respect and manners, we didn’t feel entitled as our parents set rules and boundaries, we had TVs with 3 or 4 channels, no cell phones, party landlines (we shared the line, so you had to wait until the line was clear), no internet, and we went outside and played with our friends, sometimes all day, until it was dark.
