2021 the second year after the pandemic
My tips will be a little different than they were a couple of years ago. Many things will need to be done in a different way until we can find our way back to some sense of normalcy.
I feel this year we need to focus more on eating healthier and exercising, self-care, paying off debt, find remote jobs since I don’t think an office atmosphere will be safe until at least 70 or 75 % of people are vaccinated, per the scientists and medical opinions, and setting personal goals.
- First off, you need to review the previous year and see where you saw progress and where you failed to accomplish a goal.
- You can use this in the new year to inspire you to reach your goals and keep you accountable. As you accomplish a goal you can check it off your list and feel more inspired to move on to the next goal.
- Write these down along with your new goals. Writing your goals or resolutions down has proven to give you a better chance to get to the finish line.
- Just remember to WRITE down all you want to accomplish for the year, along with a plan to get you there, and when you see things are moving backward instead of forward, review your plan and make changes if needed to get you moving ahead.
Know your values and beliefs
In the previous post, I mentioned self-awareness and knowing what your values and beliefs are, questioning feelings you have when you are uncomfortable with how it is, and changing it to how you would like it to be. Have a sense of direction to focus on priorities towards objectives that are worth our time. Stay focused, committed, and motivated to get you closer to your goals. Be resilient and overcome tough times as they occur.
SMART goals
You can still use the SMART goals to help push you towards success and attaining the accomplishments and goals you are working towards.
1. SPECIFIC – Know your specific goals.
2. MEASURABLE – Where you can see progress in reaching and measuring your goal.
3. ACHIEVABLE – Set challenging achievable goals.
4. RELEVANT & REALISTIC – Set goals you can actually accomplish. Consider obstacles you might have to overcome.
5. TIME-BOUND – Set a time frame to start and finish your goal.
Set specific goals
Personal development also consists of organizing your life and managing your time more effectively. Set specific goals and change your behavior, such as management, learning new skills, or advancing your career. What we want to achieve may change through life. Set clear goals if you wish to achieve your ambitions. Express your goals with words in a positive manner. Make sure you can see progress in reaching and measuring your goal.
Set objective performance goals by using verbs that can be observed and measured. Prioritize tasks focusing on important choices and activities that are connected to your goals. You may have to eliminate or delegate less important tasks in order to pursue your goal.
Lifetime goals – Set goals that are challenging and work out a plan of action with smaller subgoals to arrive at a plan you can start working on now. Taking smaller subgoals makes reaching the final goal not so overwhelming, where you lose motivation.
Consider the time you need to meet your goal
Consider the time in your schedule you will need to be devoted to the tasks in order to meet your goal. Being committed to the process is imperative to the development of a successful action plan. With the SMART plan, you will become more aware of choices that will lead to your success and confidence, as you watch your goals unfold in your life.

Closing thoughts
Yes, 2020 was an unpredictable year with many businesses having to close and people being laid off and losing their homes and livelihood, but 2021 seems to be moving forward so far with a positive outlook.
You might need to work harder to achieve your goals depending on your situation, but with focus and motivation, and continued following of the 5 steps in SMART goals can help push you towards success and attaining the accomplishments and goals you are working towards. Once you see progress in reaching those goals it makes it easier to reach goals in the future. It becomes a positive mindset!

I love this. We used the SMART acronym to set treatment goals at the addiction treatment center I owned, and strangely, I never thought of using it to frame my own personal goals. I’m going to start!
Thank you for your feedback Rose, I appreciate it! Yes, this is a great plan for anyone to follow in attaining their goals. My son is an addict and is finally getting the treatment he needs, but this would be another avenue to use on his road to recovery. Thank you for sharing that point!
Everyone I talk to always mention SMART goals, then I always wonder what they are talking about. Now I know. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome, I appreciate your feedback!
A great idea on how to achieve and set our goals. Thank you and very helpful!
